Best Websites for Free Online Courses

Currently, in 2026, there are many great sites that offer free online courses. These online courses give you the ability to learn practically anything under the sun, from coding and artificial intelligence to history, business and creative skills. Most of these online courses are offered free with some courses requiring a fee for a certificate. Just think of how great it would be to upgrade your skills, switch careers or even satisfy your curiosity without leaving your couch! The online learning environment continues to grow due to greater numbers of MOOCs (massive open online courses), partnerships between universities and increased participation from the tech community.

Here are my top five favorite sites (no particular order) that offer 100% free online courses in 2026. These sites rate the best based upon the quality and variety of course content and the level of student enjoyment using the sites.

1. Coursera

Coursera connects students with top-tier university business schools offering a wide variety of courses. You'll be able to access course material—including video lectures, written work, quizzes, and any other required assignments—for free. However, if you would like to receive a certificate upon completing a course, you will need to pay an additional fee.

Some of the highest-quality available courses offered through Coursera include: Google's IT Support Professional Certificate, Python for Everybody, and a number of AI/ML specializations. Thus, as a student, if you're looking for a structured way to learn or to receive credentials for having completed a course without incurring tuition fees, there is value in taking advantage of the courses available through Coursera!

What makes Coursera so appealing? The classes produced by Coursera are comparable to the experience of a professional college lecture or a Netflix documentary!

2. edx

edX has become as well known as providing an excellent place to attend online courses due to its association with established universities. Learners can take advantage of the collaboration to access course materials that would otherwise be only available to enrolled students at those universities. Often, students can access a course as an auditor, allowing the individual to view lecture materials and take quizzes, without paying anything for the courses. A well-known example of this is Harvard University's CS50 course, which attracts large numbers of individuals who are interested in learning computer science or developing other skills related to the discipline.

Courses offered through edX are generally offered in a variety of course categories: Computer Science, IT, Data Science, and Social Science, etc. Although, as you will see later, the course requirements can be quite stringent at times; one would be hard-pressed to find a venue that compares closely to edX when it concerns delivering a university-like experience in an online environment. However, individuals should know that viewing course materials online is not exactly the same as actually being on campus at one of the Ivy League colleges or universities; nonetheless, the depth and scope of the content can provide many learners with an excellent look into the world of academia.

3. Khan Academy

Kahn academy has grown to be one of the largest publicly known free online educational learning sites. The site's primary attractor is its uncomplicated design; there are no hidden fees and there are no advertisements causing distraction – so there is a high level of focus on the actual learning experience compared to most online sources. Subjects that most of the instructional videos, interactive practice problems, and quizzes cover include: math, science, economics, history, and preparation for taking standardised tests such as the SAT and LSAT. The overall goal of the project initiated by Sal Kahn is ambitious; however, it is accomplished with regard to delivering high quality education to many, if not all, people throughout the world. For new learners, non-traditional students and those wanting to boost their fundamental skill set in math and science, this delivery of information has proven to be successful. By using the progress tracking feature similar to a video game students will likely be encouraged to continue their education. Although Kahn Academy is a great learning resource, it is more useful as an adjunct to supplement traditional education versus serving as a complete substitute for traditional education.

4. freeCodeCamp

Do you wish to become a developer? FreeCodeCamp has a complete curriculum for free responsive web design, JavaScript, Python, data analysis, machine learning, etc., that includes hands-on projects and thousands of active users. You will create a portfolio while learning and many people find jobs exclusively through this platform. The exciting thing about FreeCodeCamp is that you start doing hands-on work on day one - no boring theory, and it is still one of the best free routes into technology in 2026!

5. Harvard Online

Every time a new free gem pops up from Harvard, such as CS50's Introduction to Computer Science (which is one of Harvard's most popular courses ever) or a new data science track, Stanford provides a host of offerings in AI, entrepreneurship and health for free as well. You can access these resources directly or through partners like edX. What strikes me as the most unbelievable part of this is the chance to learn from the greats Nobel laureates and the world's best and that you have the opportunity to do so for no cost to yourself.

6. OpenLearn (The Open University)

The UK Open University has nearly 1,000 courses available on a completely free, self-paced basis covering topics from health and business to language and technology. In addition to offering courses, students can earn optional digital badges. Ideal for: Learning in short, flexible bursts, trying out new areas of interest without obligation.

7. FutureLearn

FutureLearn provides online classes and educational programs through academic institutions and companies globally. The majority of FutureLearn's classes are available for free (optional upgrades available for certificates) and delivered in a staggered weekly release structure; classes include weekly topics, discussions, and short-duration classes. Some of FutureLearn's most popular classes are related to mental health, sustainability, and creative writing. In terms of atmosphere, FutureLearn has a much more community-based feeling and acts like a global classroom environment.

8. Class Central

Although not a specific online platform, this website functions as a necessary aggregator of course offerings. All of the free online classes (and their corresponding free certificates) exist on this website and have been evaluated based on their popularity. You can use this website to find lesser-known free online classes or search for companies (e.g. Google, IBM) that offer free online classes with free certificates.

Honorable Mentions Worth Checking

1. MIT OpenCourseWare allows you to access raw materials (lectures, exams) for free, no registration required.
2. Google Digital Garage / Skills offers many free courses in the areas of digital marketing, AI, and career development; you can receive certificates as well.
3. Alison and Saylor Academy both have a range of other free courses focusing on vocational skills; these courses also offer certificates upon completion.

The barriers to world class education in 2026 are low. If you are looking for a promotion, making a career change, or learning about guitar theory at 2am, you will find that these platforms offer easy access to the information you want. Sign up for one course today and the future you will be grateful you did!
